This
from Neil:
'I remember the Loewen Cinema when it was the Bijou, and
newly built!!!!! The outside looks exactly the same. I've
seen a couple of Bond films there, Return of the Jedi
(twice, I've still got ptotos of the huge billboard they had
on the wall) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.'
This
from Michael
Murphy:
'I find Loewen Cinemas to be a great experience! Having had a
caravan up the road (Sutton-On-Sea), I found myself and my
friends going to this cinema quite regularly. The cinema is
great if there are a small amount of people viewing, but
myself being quite tall I found the place quite uncomfortable. Amanda says: 'We went to the cinema and saw King Arthur which was ok. The cinema is tiny with two screens. The screen we went into has the capacity to seat a whopping 60 people! We sat at the back but you still feel like you are sitting in the front seats of the cinemas we are used to. The actual screen is small being about 14' by 6'. The screen itself has curtains over it, like a stage, until the adverts, trailers etc start. When the curtains are opened it sounds like someone is physically winding them back with a creaking noise! We got there on time and the lady who took our money (£17.50 for two adults, 3 kids) was sitting in a tiny, old fashioned booth. She said "I don't think it's started yet." She then called out to the man "Has the film started yet?" He replied "No." He then said to us "I'll wait til you sit down and then I start film!" What personal service which you wouldn't receive at Ster Century, Vue or UGC!!! It's like stepping back in time 20 years. Years ago, when we used to go to Odeon or ABC in Romford, we would not have even received that personal service then!!! There were 6 other people also watching the film at the same time as us. They told us that The Loewen Cinema is one of the few remaining independent cinemas left in the country. Certainly an experience to see a film there, It's great!' |
