This from Anthony:
'Well, it's not a bad cinema, lots of screens, nicely furnished,
good sight lines, comfortable seats....BUT
I can't tell you how bad the sound is. I've worked in the movie
business for over ten years and I have NEVER heard sound as bad
as the Megarama's.
Actually, that's a lie, I have heard sound this bad, when Dolby
do their courses on how NOT to set up cinema sound (if Megarama
had sound as bad as this in Europe, they'd be closed down by the
distributors until they got it fixed.).
Firstly, the cinemas are not properly sound-proofed. There is an
amazing amount of cross-talk between the screens. So much so
that quiet dialogue in one film is liable to be drowned out by
the explosions and effects from the screen next door.
Secondly, everything is played at full volume, even if this
distorts the sound so much that it is virtually impossible to
make any sense of. I suspect that there is a great lack of
trained personnel and nobody actually knows how to set-up a
cinema sound system properly (nor bothers to monitor to the
system with proper equipment).
And it doesn't help at all that Megarama often rents out screens
for private parties, discos and the like. The bass from the
sound systems thumps through all the screens, making watching a
film impossible.
So, to sum up, Megarama Casablanca is definitely NOT a cinema
for watching films in, more for hanging out with your mates and
picking up girls, eating popcorn, talking on your mobile phone
or playing computer games while ignoring the film and annoying
the rest of the audience (actually not, most of them are doing
the same).
Which is a pity, as regarding the other couple of cinemas in
Casablanca (though they do have MUCH better sound) their general
state of repair and cleanliness leaves much to be desired.
Incidentally, this review is not the result of a couple of weeks
holiday in Maroc, I have lived in Casablanca for four years and,
despite numerous complaints, Megarama is getting worse, not
better. As their manageress told me, the owner isn't
particularly interested in film, and discos pay more than film
ticket buyers.... I leave you to draw your own conclusions.'
