Scream VI (2023) is not just your ordinary horror sequel with a new setting and the return of Ghostface. Despite the shocking news that Neve Campbell wouldn’t be returning as Sidney Prescott, I started to consider the direction the story could take. The last conversation between Sidney and Sam in Scream (2022) hinted that this would become Sam’s story, rather than Sidney’s. It was also fair to let Sidney find happiness after enduring so much throughout the series. With these factors in mind, I became less upset and more intrigued by what Scream VI could offer.

Scream VI surpasses all expectations, establishing itself as the best Scream sequel and a standout in the slasher genre. The film wastes no time in immersing viewers in a captivating narrative crafted by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, along with writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. The story combines thrilling horror elements with heartfelt moments, touching on timely commentary about the film industry and the state of horror.
At its core, Scream VI explores the sisterly bond between Sam and Tara, highlighting the aftermath of the previous film’s events and their attempts to move forward. As they navigate their new lives in New York City, they soon find themselves pursued by a new Ghostface killer. Their strong bond as sisters adds depth and sweetness to the story. Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown as Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin also have their shining moments, allowing their characters to go beyond stereotypes and showcasing their likability, humor, and bravery.
Courteney Cox’s return as Gale Weathers is superb, and despite being an original character in a sea of newcomers, she effortlessly carries the weight of the past films. It’s refreshing to see Gale given moments and developments previously unseen in the series. While there is one particular development with Gale that may not sit well with everyone, it leads to one of the most memorable moments in the film.
Continuing the Legacy and Embracing New Horizons
Scream VI does not solely rely on its predecessors for success but rather moves the beloved characters forward in a satisfying manner. The film successfully develops its characters, leaving audiences invested in their journeys and eager to see what the future holds for them. Nevertheless, it also works as a self-contained story that could serve as a satisfying conclusion to the franchise, which is commendable.
