Overview

A stolen seismic weapon is activated in Yemen. A hostage freed there tries in vain to warn against its global effect. It starts seismic activity at the Californian fault line where her daughter and ex are monitoring it. Can they stop it?

In a world perpetually on the brink of destruction, speculation about its impending demise abounds. Theories swirl regarding the unknown catalyst for humanity’s ultimate downfall. Amidst hushed whispers in the darkest corners, tales of a super weapon capable of hastening this apocalypse emerge. On January 23, 2018, or so it seemed, the countdown to doomsday commenced with the release of the latest disaster film, “Shockwave: Countdown to Disaster,” on DVD in the USA, courtesy of Monarch Home Entertainment.

Directed by Nick Lyon (known for “Punk Love” in 2006 and “Bullet” in 2014), the movie unfolds its gripping narrative in Yemen. The protagonist, Kate (played by Stacey Oristano, recognized for her roles in “Friday Night Lights” and “Bunheads”), finds herself kidnapped alongside a male companion by a terrorist group eager to exploit her knowledge of a stolen super weapon. Unbeknownst to the terrorists, a team of U.S. Navy Seals is on a mission to extract them.

As the daring rescue mission unfolds, Kate is compelled to activate the resonance machine against her will. Though successfully extracted, the activated weapon begins to burrow into the Earth’s crust, unleashing a shockwave and fiery tornado. Kate, seemingly the only one grasping the gravity of the situation, struggles to convey the impending danger.

Meanwhile, Kate’s husband, Rob (portrayed by Rib Hillis of “General Hospital” and “Port Charles” fame), is a professor headed to study abnormal seismic activity along the San Andreas fault in California. Accompanied by his student, Jake (Tyler Perez), and their daughter Jessie (Morgan Lindholm), the family remains unaware of Kate’s involvement in the unfolding catastrophe.

Kate endeavors to seek aid from the Department of Defense to shut down the machine, encountering resistance from figures like Pierce (played by Bruce Thomas). Drew (Evan Sloan), a data specialist in the DOD, becomes her ally, believing in her mission to stop the impending disaster at any cost.

As the family reunites in California, global disturbances escalate, and a race against time ensues. The film skillfully weaves together the struggles of Kate’s group, the U.S. Government, and the destructive machine itself in a high-stakes battle for survival. Can they prevent the impending apocalypse before it’s too late?

“Shockwave: Countdown to Disaster” stands as a compelling disaster film, expertly incorporating elements that evoke excitement and fear. The script showcases the brilliance of the screenwriters, offering a plausible and intelligently crafted weapon of destruction. The special effects depicting the storms and shockwaves are both terrifying and visually stunning.

Unlike many films where character development is sacrificed for action, this movie strikes a balance. Each character serves a purpose and is sufficiently fleshed out, making them compelling and believable. The acting, subtly nuanced and convincing, adds depth to the characters, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Staying true to its promise of an action-packed disaster movie, “Shockwave: Countdown to Disaster” delivers on multiple fronts. From its visuals to the writing, the film is excellently produced. In a genre crowded with lackluster offerings, this movie stands out, earning a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars from CrypticRock. For enthusiasts of disaster films, “Shockwave: Countdown to Disaster” is a must-watch.
