Following a group of privileged individuals on vacation, the show highlighted the dark and deadly twists that unfolded during their stay. While the sun-kissed Hawaiian haze and Mike White’s unique approach to social satire appealed to many, I personally struggled to fully grasp the show’s tone and off-key humor. Consequently, I chose not to continue watching and opted to use my Binge trial elsewhere.

However, influenced by the online buzz and pressure, I finally gave in and decided to binge-watch season 1 before diving into the highly anticipated season 2. Unlike its predecessor, season 2 of The White Lotus takes place off the coast of Italy and introduces a fresh murder mystery to be solved. With a new lineup of stars and a compelling new plot, the second season quickly captured my attention.
A Mysterious Death and Intriguing Characters
Similar to the first season, season 2 opens with a mysterious death. Daphne, an initially sweet character, encounters a body floating in the Ionian Sea during what was supposed to be her final swim. This sets the stage for a gripping whodunit and engages the audience from the very beginning. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to a diverse cast of characters, each with their own unique traits and dynamics.
Characters Worth Investing In
Unlike the characters in season 1, who often felt unlikable and one-dimensional, the characters of season 2 were more compelling and well-developed. By choosing to anthologize the series, Mike White ensured that the audience wouldn’t be stuck with the same set of characters throughout multiple seasons, preventing the potential staleness that comes with their repetition.
Deepening the Characters
In season 2, White took more time to develop the characters, striking a balance between likability and intrigue. For instance, Daphne, initially presented as a stealthily snappy trophy wife, revealed herself to be much more complex than anticipated. Her relationship with Cameron and the contrasting dynamic between Ethan and Harper added depth, creating a captivating narrative filled with clever dialogue and excellent performances.
Tanya’s Robust Narrative
Even Tanya, a returning character from season 1, was given a more robust narrative in season 2.
